World class tourism destination Vancouver, Canada has much to offer the food-loving traveler. As the number of restaurants in Vancouver increases every year, it’s hard for visitors to know where to eat. Here are four top restaurants to try.
- Vancouver’s newest offering is Hawksworth Restaurant, located in the recently renovated Rosewood Hotel Georgia. Voted Restaurant of the Year by Vancouver Magazine, and led by Chef of the Year, David Hawksworth, Hawksworth Restaurant is a culinary masterpiece. Be sure to sample David Hawksworth menu. His dedication to fresh, local ingredients translates into beautifully executed morsels that satisfy any appetite. There is an old world charm to the service, yet the food is modern and delicious. If you prefer drinks before dinner, there are three beautiful bars to choose from in the Rosewood Hotel Georgia. My favorite is the bar adjacent to Hawksworth Restaurant. With its entrance off Georgia Street, it is frequented by local business elite. My favorite cocktail is the house aperitif, a steal at $5. A quieter choice is the lobby bar, popular with hotel guests for its old world charm and European elegance. The young and trendy migrate towards the 4th floor lounge, Reflections, with its open patio, techno-jazz fusion vibe and penchant for people watching.
- If you’ve manage to acquire tickets to the Vancouver Opera or any of the plays offered by the Vancouver Playhouse head towards Chambar for your pre-show meal. This Belgium restaurant became an instant hit with locals for its European menu and casual, contemporary atmosphere. Be sure to book in advance though, Chambar is known to have a line-up after work. If you indicate you’re going to a show, they can accommodate tight schedules and will have you fed and out the door in plenty of time to walk to the theatre. Try any of the mussel dishes, a house specialty and don’t pass on the frites. Fried in duck fat, they are extra crispy and not to be missed.
- Aficionados of Indian cuisine will want to check out Vij’s, an outstanding modern restaurant that features carefully prepared Indian specialties like none you’ve ever tried. Don’t be surprised if you fall in love with this gem of a restaurant. Their philosophy is to use Indian spices and techniques, paired with local and seasonal ingredients. Be prepared to wait though, as this restaurant doesn’t take reservations and is extremely popular with locals and visitors alike.
- Edible Canada is a charming bistro and retail outlet at Granville Island and is located across the street from the public market. The menu focuses on BC and Canadian ingredients with ever-changing seasonal specialties. The casual atmosphere is welcoming after a bustling shopping trip in the market. If specialty foods are your thing, Edible Canada also sells packaged culinary treats and gift baskets, a perfect place to pick up a souvenir or two.
