When visiting the Irvine, CA area in Orange County, here are three attractions you won't want to miss.
Head to the beach! Within 30 minutes of Irvine you will find three of the best beaches in California, or anywhere in the United States for that matter, in Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach.
In Huntington Beach you have one of the top surf spots in the United States, along with a fantastic pier, and every type of restaurant and bar you could possibly want to indulge in. Don't miss the US Open of Surfing in August, one of the best events every year in Southern California.
Newport Beach is well known as one of the most affluent areas in Orange County. In Newport Harbor you'll find several man-made islands filled with beautiful homes and beautiful beaches. One of those is Balboa Island, where you'll find the Balboa Fun Zone Amusement Park, and a ferry servicing the island. Known for it's festivities that go on throughout the year you won't want to miss Newport Beach and Balboa Island. You can find some awesome hotels in the area as well.
Laguna Beach is one of California's most thriving communities of artists. Take a walk, skate, or ride on the boardwalk and you'll find out for yourself. Whether you're enjoying your time on the beach, in a local art gallery, or just people watching on the boardwalk, you will want to visit Laguna Beach if you're in the Irvine area.
When you think California you think beach, but Limestone Canyon Regional Park, just 30 minutes to the east of Irvine, will certainly change your view on Orange County. Known as the "Mini-Grand Canyon", Limestone is a mecca for hikers, mountain bikers, sight seeing, and naturalists, and one of the great beauties of the Irvine area.
While not as beautiful as the beach or the wilderness, the Irvine Spectrum is a sight to see in itself. This large outdoor mall boasts a ferris wheel, 164 shops and restaurants and a 21-screen movie theater, which was the biggest in the Western United States for some time after it's completion. Easily accessed by either I-5 or I-405, the Irvine Spectrum is a "must see" in Orange County.

When traveling on a budget here are a few things to consider:
If you're going to park at the airport go online for a coupon to the lot you're looking to use. Often times lots are offering significant savings on their websites and you'll pay much less to park in the exact same spot.
Fight the urge to buy anything in the airport. Whether it's food, drinks, a magazine, or just a candy bar, it's all too expensive. Grab something to eat before you head to the airport and bring your own book. You may save enough money to buy that drink on the plane that's also too expensive. (avoid those as well if traveling on a budget)
Before you travel, research the public transportation system in the area you're traveling to. Many areas have such intricate public transportation systems that a rental car won't be necessary to make your trip worthwhile. Whether it's bus, train, or tram, many cities offer very cheap transportation to every area you'll want to visit.
If you do have to rent a car, shop for gas mileage instead of comfort and appearance, and don't pre-pay the gas charges. There are gas stations where you will find lower prices, and the quality of gas that you put into the rental isn't essential.
When renting a
hotel room aim for a kitchenette, or at the very least a refrigerator, in your room. Eating out every meal adds up and a short trip to the grocery store can save you a lot of money over the course of your trip. Even if it's just one meal per day, a loaf of bread, lunch meat, and condiments you can save on food by cooking on your own.
Happy Hour!! Just as eating out can add up, so can drinking out. Look for Happy Hours and drink specials when going out to enjoy dinner and drinks and you'll end up with more money to do the same the next day. Be careful of how much you drink however, as over-drinking often relates very closely to over-spending when you're looking to travel on a budget.
Avoid taking cash out of cash machines and use your debit or credit card for purchases, as bank fees can add up over the course of a trip. Cash is often times needed, so take it out of your own bank and keep it close while you're traveling.
